This massive medal was made to commemorate General Winfield Scott's contributions in the Mexican-American War. This medal is considered by some to be C. C. Wright's masterpiece and one of the most impressive US Military medals.

The obverse was designed by Salathiel Ellis. The reverse was designed by G. C. Humphries. The Latin inscription 'DEL.' means 'delineavit'.
