The November Constitution was signed in 1863 and created a join parliament to govern the affairs of Denmark and Schleswig. This was an attempt by Denmark to bring Schleswig under its control and incited Germany to start the Second Schleswig War.

The inscription 'MED GUD FOR ÆRE OG RET' was the royal motto of Christian IX and means 'With God for honour and justice'.
